Presentation

This kiln, built in 1855 and restored between 2004 and 2009, was used to calcine limestone to produce lime. The guided tour allows visitors to enter the site and discover the lime-making process and its uses.

This kiln, built against a rise separating it from the D306 departmental road (formerly the N6 national road), is located in a limestone quarry containing gryphaea fossils. It is a massive structure 6,50 meters in diameter, built with large, roughly hewn stones. The interior is amphora-shaped, with a small opening at the top (the kiln mouth). Height: 4,50 meters. Volume: 14 cubic meters. Operating temperature: 950°C.
This kiln was probably used in the construction of the two neighbouring viaducts as well as other works nearby: bridges, tunnels, farms etc.
