What if the history of our village could be read not only in the archives but also in the village walls? An original walk to discover the reused stones from the old abbey.
For the 2026 Heritage Days, the association Savigny, Heritage of Yesterday and Tomorrow, offers an original walk to discover the reused stones from the former Saint-Martin abbey, dismantled after the French Revolution and used as a stone quarry.
A region's heritage is often discreet, integrated into everyday life. Here, it's not about a spectacular, intact monument, but rather a scattered memory. This walk invites you to take a fresh look at facades you think you know. The village houses become a veritable open-air museum.
The tour takes place in the streets of the village, with several stops for commentary.
A two-part process:
1. Ascent to the Clock Tower
One of the 12th-century towers still standing from the old abbey. From its summit, visitors can discover an exceptional view of the village and better understand the original location of the abbey in the landscape.
2. Visit to the Antoine Coquard Lapidary Museum
Through this walk, we offer an experience that is at once historical, architectural, and sensory: learning to read the walls, understanding that heritage never completely disappears, and discovering that even stones have a memory. Because our village hasn't lost its abbey: it has transformed it.
And its stones continue to tell its story.
