Museum Overview

Jacques Barry is well-known to jazz musicians, as his famous rhinoceros is the symbol featured at the Rhino Jazz Festival. His exhibition, Just Before the Forests, is a kind of Wood's Session, a metaphor for our resilience in the face of the darkness of time.

Jacques Barry was born in 1943 in Limoges. He currently lives and works in Saint-Étienne. He has regularly exhibited his work in over sixty solo exhibitions in France, Europe, and the United States, and in more than fifty group exhibitions worldwide. His famous rhinoceros sculpture was featured at the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium during the 1998 FIFA World Cup, as a viewpoint indicator in Saint-Fons, and on the posters for the Rhino Jazz Festival in Rive-de-Gier.

The exhibition will showcase a selection of the painter's iconic works, understood as a metaphor for human resilience in the face of the darkness of time. Through an almost childlike relationship with the animal kingdom and the forest, Jacques Barry introduces existential questions, which he manages to address with enough irony and humor to create a highly personal theater of the absurd, bordering on a poetry of unfathomable lightness. He thus opens us to the sensitive understanding of essential things.
