Presentation

Built by the Romans to supply Lyon with water, the Gier aqueduct can be visited in Mornant, with several sections accessible. Present in both the form of a bridge and an underground tunnel, discover its construction and operation.

At 86 km, it is the longest aqueduct leading to Lugdunum, capital of the Three Gauls during the Gallo-Roman period. It originated in Izieux in the Loire department, at the foot of the Pilat massif, thanks to a water intake on the Gier River. Several remains are still visible today, particularly in the commune of Mornant. At the Mornantet site, you will discover a complete arch and a pillar, all covered with the "opus reticulatum" facing. The visit continues with the canal, which at this point begins its underground passage through the village.
