Presentation

The L'Araire association invites you to discover the water supply of Lugdunum with a 10km hike, approximately 3h30 of walking on the upper part of the Roman aqueduct of the Yzeron.

510m elevation gain, accessible to all. Good walking shoes are recommended.

Founded in forty-three BC, and becoming the capital of the Three Gauls less than thirty years later under the reign of Augustus, the city of Lugdunum quickly found itself needing to seek out the water necessary for its development in the hinterland.
To achieve this, four aqueducts were built: the Mont d'Or, Yzeron, Brévenne, and Gier aqueducts. With over two hundred kilometers of pipes, it is one of the largest water supply networks for a city in the Roman world.
