OTIVGRoman aqueduct of the Gier - Viollières inspection chamber
Chaponost
Whether with friends, family or as a couple, enjoy the comfort of having a guide all to yourself! She will answer your questions and adapt the pace of the visit to your wishes for the discovery of the longest section of aqueduct visible in France.
The Gier Aqueduct is one of the aqueducts that supplied Lugdunum (Lyon) with water. Drawing water from the Gier River at Saint-Chamond in the Loire region, it carried water 86 km to Fourvière. Several remains are still visible today, notably in the towns of Brignais and Chaponost. At the Plat de l'Air site, you will discover 72 of the 92 arches that supported the canal during Roman times. Thanks to the remains on site (a hunting reservoir and a ramp), you will understand how the Yzeron siphon worked, allowing the water to cross the Yzeron Valley, one of the many natural obstacles that stood in the aqueduct's path. This site, listed since 1900, offers a fascinating journey back in time and is well worth a visit!
