Museum Overview
Whether civil or religious, banners bear witness to the past of our towns and villages. Through their symbolism, they bring people together, unite them, and rally them around a belief, a value, a passion, or a demand.
Exhibition produced by the Departmental and Metropolitan Archives of the Rhône.
Thanks to the expertise of the artisans who created them, they offer high-quality creations from the point of view of history, art and the techniques used.
As some practices have changed, banners have often been forgotten and poorly preserved. It is to preserve them that the Department for the Conservation of Antiquities and Works of Art has inventoried and studied them.
This exhibition offers the opportunity to discover the role, symbolism and diversity of this little-known heritage.
The 11 thematic panels (history, forms, materials, supports, etc.) are accompanied by authentic banners of Arbresle companies, preserved by the Friends of Old Arbresle.
