Saconay Castle, whose existence is documented as early as the 14th century, is a listed historical monument. Embellished and enlarged by the Saconay brothers in the 16th century, it reached its golden age in the 18th century when, in 1709, it became the property of the Dareste family, wealthy Lyon bankers and aldermen of the city of Lyon. It has remained in the same family ever since, and the current owner is a descendant of that family.
Despite a long period of neglect, the 18th-century interior decorations have remained in very good condition: the magnificent gallery, adorned with 16th- and 18th-century frescoes and murals, has regained its ceiling after being severely damaged by leaks due to the catastrophic state of the roofs. The bedrooms and reception rooms have retained their beautiful woodwork, parquet floors, furniture, and tapestries. The chapel has been completely restored. The outbuildings—fruit store, dovecote, and forge—have remained remarkably authentic.
The current owners inherited Saconay in a sorry state, without running water and with a highly unsafe electrical system. They rolled up their sleeves to restore the castle and make it more comfortable.
