This fortified village was the object of intense rivalry during the Middle Ages between the Counts of Forez and the Counts of Lyon. Its power reached its peak in the 14th and 15th centuries. Moreover, the route to Santiago de Compostela follows the old Roman road, which Rochefort overlooks from its rocky spur.
