Exhibition "Women at work, between artistic gestures and perspectives"

This exhibition is part of the "100 works that tell the story of work" operation led by the Musée d'Orsay.

Women have always worked. However, because work was long defined around production and remuneration, women's work was often considered secondary, or even nonexistent. In the fields, at home, or in workshops, they nevertheless supported the local economy and fully participated in community life. Mechanization and industrialization finally made some of their work visible and salaried in factories, thus questioning their place between traditional roles and new forms of activity. Thanks to exceptional loans, the Écomusée du Haut-Beaujolais presents an exhibition that brings its ethnographic collections into dialogue with works of art from numerous museums. This cross-disciplinary perspective allows for an exploration of both the reality and the representations of women's work in the 19th and 20th centuries. Visitors are invited to discover a dual journey: a historical and ethnographic approach, and an interpretation of the artworks offering a first introduction to art history.
