Built between 40 and 50 AD, the ancient theatre follows the semicircular shape of the Pipet hill against which it is built. This monument, dedicated to entertainment and the glory of Rome, is one of the most important remains of all Roman Gaul.

Rediscovered at the beginning of the 13th century thanks to extensive excavation and restoration work, this Gallo-Roman treasure rivals the greatest theaters of Rome. Its vast hemicycle, composed of 46 tiers of seating, once accommodated up to 500 spectators.

Even today, it comes alive every summer during the famous Jazz à Vienne festival, which brings together nearly 8,000 enthusiasts in an exceptional setting, enhanced by a recent restoration completed in 2020. The venue harmoniously blends heritage and emotions, for unforgettable evenings under the open sky.

From the stands, the spectacle doesn't end there: a breathtaking panorama unfolds before you. The Rhône River, the city, the terraced vineyards, and the peaks of Mont Pilat create a vibrant and magnificent scene. Below, the remains of the odeon, nestled at the foot of Mont Saint-Just, are a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of ancient Vienne.

Then look north: the ruins of the Château de la Bâtie proudly overlook the Rhône from Mont Salomon. And for an even more spectacular view, head to the Mont Pipet viewpoint. Up there, bathed in sunlight, you'll be captivated by the beauty of the red rooftops, the gentle slopes of the Côte-Rôtie vineyards, and the rolling horizon of the Pilat mountains.
