A major episode in the geological history of the territory: the formation of the Hercynian mountain range. This range, born from the collision between two ancient continents, covered a large part of Europe from 400 to 300 million years ago.
At that time, Beaujolais was in the wrong place at the wrong time... Like the Blue Stone of Brouilly, the pre-existing rocks were swept up in a kind of infernal machine that obliterated everything in its path. Under the weight of the accumulated rocks, the pressure and heat of the subsoil were so intense that the rocks melted, forming pockets of magma. Finding no escape, these magmas stabilized deep underground and cooled very slowly to form granites (formed solely from the aggregation of minerals). Erosion, followed by the tectonic movements that have taken place here, have since exposed these granites, allowing us to see the root of this immense mountain range.
The Hercynian chain stretched for over 5,000 km in length and nearly 700 km in width, from southern Spain to the Caucasus.
Today, only fragments remain, composed of the mountain ranges of the Massif Central, the Armorican Massif, the Vosges, and the Ardennes. Some geologists agree that the Hercynian mountain range was comparable to the current Himalayan range.
