Museum Overview
In the heart of the Haut-Beaujolais region, enjoy the soothing forest atmosphere, between undergrowth and pastures. Let yourself be guided by the scent of Douglas firs, autumn chestnuts, and a gourmet stop in Saint-Igny-de-Vers.
You will love:
• The beauty of the Haut-Beaujolais if you like forest settings, the influence of nature to release tension, circulate energy and walk in joy.
• The appearance of green pastures at the edge of the forest, magnificent links to go from one undergrowth to another.
• Breathe in the scent of Douglas fir sap, listen to the discreet song of the birds, collect the chestnuts that have fallen in the middle of the paths in autumn.
• The shops in St-Igny-de-Vers and in particular the grocery store, where you can find farm cheeses to complete your picnic or bring back a gourmet souvenir.
You will benefit from it more:
• If you have an app to identify wildflowers and forest trees.
• By doing a short series of stretches before setting off on the circuit, the first few kilometers are uphill.
• If the weather is wet, bring spare shoes and socks. Springs run down the trails, which have many waterlogged ruts.
• Why not run if you like trail running, and tackle Mount St-Rigaud by extending the route by 15 km - blue markings?
A little bit of culture:
The hamlet of Vers
It's astonishing to imagine that from 1840 to 1988, a genuine flour mill operated in Vers, in a countryside where wheat is now virtually nonexistent. The wheel still turns, driven by the waters of the Sornin River. In the past, some fifteen mills lined the riverbanks. Another distinctive feature of the hamlet is the chapel, built in the 15th century. It possesses considerable charm with its glazed tile roofs, so characteristic of neighboring Burgundy, and an interior entirely hand-painted in 1900.
To speak of Vers is also to remember that the hamlet was the site of a massacre in June 1944. Raoul du Sordet and Noël Guittat, local residents and members of the Resistance, were killed there under fire and torture at the hands of the German army. The tragedy is recounted on the website www.chapelle-de-vers.com
