Simone Veil Park Geosite

In the heart of the Monplaisir district, the Simone Veil Park invites visitors on a true journey through the geological history of the Beaujolais region. Since 2018, this area has been recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark, and this geological trail is a beautiful example of this.

Designed as an open-air timeline, the trail showcases the main emblematic rocks of Beaujolais, witnesses to nearly 500 million years of history. From metamorphic gneisses, formed deep within the Earth, to granites, golden stones, or even blue stone, each outcrop tells a story of the landscape's formation.

Over the ages, the Beaujolais region has successively been home to a sea dotted with underwater volcanoes, a mountain range, and then an inland sea. The emergence of the Alps during the Tertiary period reshaped the region, creating numerous faults and bringing ancient rocks to the surface, which are now visible along the trail.

The Simone Veil Park Geosite is thus an educational and sensory walk, which allows you to discover how the diversity of rocks has shaped the landscapes, villages and terroirs of Beaujolais.
