The Biesuz farm, in Ampuis

Precious guardian of the Ampuis pepper

At the northernmost tip of the Rhône Valley, the landscape, long shaped by agriculture, catches the eye. At the foot of the prestigious terraces of Côte-Rôtie, the The market gardens of Ampuis stretch along the Rhône.On these alluvial lands warmed by a generous sun, pushes the Ampuis pepper, a treasure from a forgotten region.

On the grounds of the Biesuz farm, which has been awarded the "Bienvenue à la ferme" label.

Precursor of Carnot market

Installed as maraichers in Ampuis since 1988, Serge and Véronique Biesuz now work with their son Stéphaneperpetuating a artisanal and family know-how.

For the little story, Serge is one of the co-founders25 years ago, from theDon't miss the farmers' market on Wednesday evenings in Place Carnot.

There are fresh, raw or processed products, sold directly from the farm to consumers, as guaranteed by the label " Welcome to the farm ».

Market gardeners for all four seasons

On the lands of Ampuis, a around fifty vegetable varieties are traditionally grown in open fields where, thanks to the use of greenhouses to mitigate climatic hazards.

Fleshy tomatoes, fragrant basil, crisp carrots, rustic cabbages or delicate cardoons… the list is diverse and enticing, because the Biesuz follow the rhythm of the seasons to guarantee the freshness of their harvests in our baskets.

The Ampuis pepper

Confidential on the markets

A rare gem of the southern Rhône region, the "little Ampuisais" is part of the family of forgotten fruits and vegetables, like two other old local varieties, apricots and Ampuis chard.

Its seeds are sown in February, then the plans became vigorous planted in early May. La picking spreads out from late June to October.

Once ubiquitous in vegetable gardens, today you have to be on the lookout to find it at greengrocers' stalls. The Biesuz family is therefore among this handful of enthusiasts who strive to cultivate it, and share its bounty with us!

You will also be able to meet Serge and Stéphane me on markets Carnot square, Vienna and Ampuis, where they are present every week.

Their products are also sold in Ampuis, in the Valferme, run in rotation by farmers from the area.

Refined in the kitchen

Small and ribbed, it resembles the shape of a lantern. Its skin is thin, like his chair at the sweet flavorwhich makes it an unexpected dish that can be cooked with ease.

Serge Biesuz invites us to taste it in two ways. :

– Simply raw in a salad, accompanied by tomatoes.

– Stuffed for an appetizer. Two recipe ideas found online will inspire cooks. One is based on onion compote, and the other of Eggplant compote with creamy sheep's cheese.

And to showcase the pepper during a cocktail party with local flavors, don't hesitate to pair it with other stars of the country:

– For the cheese platter: PDO Rigotte of Condrieu, by playing on a sweet/savory combination with one of the signature jams of Philippe BrunettonMaster jam maker in Longes.

– As an accompaniment: one of the two AOCs in the area, the Condrieu and the Cote Rotie or, an apple juice from Pilat.

An idea for a gourmet getaway near the south

Take it TER train to Vienna, then continue to bicycle to Ampuis taking advantage of the proximity of the river thanks to the ViaRhôna:

– Rent bicycles: Vienna Condrieu Tourism et Mobilboard Condrieu

– Rally Vienna to Ampuis via ViaRhôna

– Stop in Valferme to put together a picnic and settle down along the Rhône to take the time to savor the moment

– Tasting wines in the cool of the vineyards: Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu AOCs
